Dr. Karline Wilson-Mitchell, Associate Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), has been teaching professional midwifery since 2008. She was the director of the TMU, Midwifery department. between 2018-2024. She is passionate about reproductive justice that informs midwifery education, healthcare practice and global partnerships.

She has been a registered nurse since 1984, and practiced as a midwife since 1992 in urban and rural settings in the U.S. and Canada. She’s acted as a consultant for leadership and curriculum development in education in Jamaica, Tanzania, Zambia, Burundi, Uganda and South Sudan.

Her research and scholarship has examined African diasporic traditions around family, perinatal care, and challenges learners to develop creative ways of conceiving and recreating healthy birth environments for Black families. Her scholarship problematizes the health disparities experienced by Black Canadians including perinatal mental health challenges faced by new immigrants and refugees. She launched the Colour of Birth Symposium and Living Art Exhibition February 1-2, 2024 at Sears Atrium.

This event permitted like-minded people to connect, to examine the historical narrative, explore current health stats, examine immigration and health worker policies, while interrogating the current healthcare system for Black reproductive healthcare. Karline’s research team is currently in research and development of AI-facilitated information technology that supports constructive feedback and self-reflection during clinical learning. She supports harm reduction and reflexive praxis during the teaching-learning process.
